Reefer Trailers – A Guide to Cargo & Temperature Ranges
At Mount Trailer Company, we’re proud to have new and used reefer trailers for sale. But we know different drivers may be transporting various types of cargo. So we’ve prepared this guide to help you understand what a reefer trailer can carry and some cargo temperatures that will accommodate the different hauls.
Temperatures & What You Can Carry
Thanks to a compressor located in the reefer trailer that allows for temperature control, transporting different types of goods at specific temperatures is possible with these trailers.
If you’re looking to purchase a reefer trailer, always be sure that you do your research regarding the regulations for transporting the items you will be carrying and ensuring the trailer you are looking for can safely handle your cargo.
Different Cargo Types & Temperature Ranges
Meat, Fish, Milk Products, & Poultry
Meat and poultry products are a common cargo product, but due to the potential of bacteria, meat and poultry must be transported and kept at, or below, 40˚F. Any variance above that temperature may result in bacteria and the spoiling of products.
In some cases, these products are frozen during transportation and later dethawed once they arrive to avoid bacteria growth. Depending on the reefer trailer, you may transport different products at different temperatures if the trailer has designated temperature zones.
Produce
Produce is another very common product you may carry, but since produce can quickly spoil, temperature control and cleanliness are vital during transportation and all the right documentation. Now, remember, not all produce can be kept at the same temperature, so we’ve listed a few of the temperatures you can store some everyday produce items.
- Can generally watermelon, bananas, tomatoes, and cucumber at a range of 45˚F – 50˚F
- Can keep green beans and potatoes at approx. 40˚F – 45˚F
- Avocadoes should be at around 38˚F – 40˚F
- Grapes, apples, greens, and berries can all be transported at around 32˚F – 35˚F
Drugs & Medication
Pharmaceuticals and their transportation are another product where temperature control is vital. Depending on the type of medication, even a few degrees can ruin a batch. Typically, medications and drugs are stored at either room temperature, refrigerated temperatures (approx. 2˚C to 8˚C), or freezing/cryogenic (0˚C to -155˚C).Get Reefer Trailers, Dry Van Trailers, & More Today
