Used Semi-Trailers Can Be a Great Deal – But Only If You’re Careful
There are a lot of used semi-trailers on the market right now, which is an excellent opportunity for truckers and shipping companies. For growth-oriented, the time is right to expand the capacities of your fleet or to pick up your first trailer so that you can go fully independent.
However, you need to be careful! Many used semi-trailers on the market have been mistreated or weren’t properly maintained. To get the best value on your investment – and to ensure you can haul your loads safely – you need to take time to investigate the trailer carefully before buying.
These are the most critical focus areas.
Four Musts When Buying Used Semi-Trailers
1 – Look into the trailer’s value and history
First, is the trailer even being sold for a reasonable price? Be sure to comparison-shop and check prices through other outlets. Also, be sure to ask the seller why they want to sell the trailer. If possible, get its service records as well.
In particular, be very wary if the trailer was in an accident. That can cause irreparable damage.
2 – Check the tires
Tires are an excellent indicator of how well-maintained the trailer is overall. If its tires are in good shape, things look good – but flat, misshapen, or badly worn tires all suggest poor maintenance.
Also, if the tire wear is uneven, that points to issues with the axles, wheels, or drums.
Also, check the brakes while you’re at it for signs of wear or damage.
3 – Look underneath
Always take time to inspect the undercarriage of a trailer, because that’s where damage is most likely to be hiding. Cracks or rust are huge red flags that the trailer isn’t worth buying.
Check all the welds to ensure they’re secure, and watch out for obvious recent welds. That could indicate a recent accident the buyer isn’t mentioning.
4 – Verify the electrical system
Be sure to hook up the trailer to a truck and turn everything on. Make sure the lights and other electrical systems are all functioning properly. If it’s a reefer, test out the refrigeration system: does it achieve proper low temperatures in a short amount of time?
