Why Add a Flatbed Trailer to Your Garage?

Written on . Posted in Blog

If you’re an independent operator trying to expand the range of loads you can haul or a small garage trying to grow, flatbed trailers could be the answer.  Flatbeds are true workhorses of the transportation industry and have plenty of practical applications carrying high-value loads.

Better yet, there are always plenty of used flatbed trailers for sale so that you can expand your business at affordable prices!

These are just a few of the ways flatbeds are used and could improve your job prospects.

Five Common Uses For Flatbed Trailers

1 – Hauling heavy machinery

Large construction equipment, such as cranes or steamrollers, typically cannot drive on the highways under their own power.  Hauling large construction equipment almost always happens on a flatbed.  In some cases, multiple smaller vehicles, such as forklifts, might even fit on one flatbed.

The high value of these machines, combined with their importance to construction projects, make them a great job to take.

2 – Construction materials

Don’t want to deal with large machinery?  Construction materials are also often transported on flatbeds.  Materials such as pipes, rebar, lumber, or even prefab building components won’t fit standard trailers.  They need higher ceilings or room to overhang in the back.  Hauling these can be an easy and reliable way to make a lot of money.

3 – Hauling scrap, waste, or recyclables

The other end of construction projects typically results in a lot of waste: scrap metal, broken pieces of concrete, broken materials, etc.  Because these come in irregular sizes, they’re much easier to transport on an open flatbed than trying to cram them into a trailer.  These jobs are easy and low-stress, and any construction project will need to clean up afterward.

4 – Landscaping materials

How do you transport a tree, shrubbery, decorative boulders, or other large landscaping features?  Usually on a flatbed!  Landscapers need heavy transportation, and being ‘on call’ for a landscaping service can be a great way to pick up some extra work.

5 – Anything oversized

Any oversized load, such as a mobile home, will go onto a flatbed.  These can be challenging jobs, as a lot of extra route planning is needed (can the load fit under every overpass?) and may require additional permits, but the payoff is usually well worth the effort.
