Understanding Reefer Trailers – What They Are and How They Work
Refrigerated trailers – called reefer trailers – are one of the most essential types of cargo trailers on the road. Unlike typical dry van trailers, reefers are fully climate-controlled, with systems capable of keeping the interior cold or even below freezing. They’re necessary for transporting perishable temperature-sensitive products, including fresh produce, frozen foods, and many medicines, such as insulin.
Mount Trailer Company is your Portland, OR, expert in all types of cargo trailers, and we have an extensive stock of new and used reefers. Let’s look at the things you need to know about reefer trailers!
How Refrigerated Trailers Work
There’s nothing special about the refrigeration system – in principle, it’s the same as any other typical refrigerator or freezer. Reefer Trailers have a compressor and evaporator coil, pumping coolant through the system which alternates between gaseous and liquid form to capture heat and transfer it out of the cargo bay.
The only major difference is that in reefer trailers, the refrigeration system is powered by a separate motor – typically diesel-powered, although electric-powered models have also recently begun to enter the market.
They also have some specialized electronics that monitor the interior conditions, including temperature and humidity, and send that information to the cab so the driver can monitor their trailer.
A regular reefer trailer typically set to temperatures between -17˚C (1˚F) and 10˚C (50˚F). More powerful models also exist, potentially going as low as -150˚C (-238˚F) for cryogenic storage. These are significantly more expensive and need a lot of energy to maintain such low temperatures.
What Do Reefer Trailers Typically Haul?
Due to the added expense of owning and operating them, reefer trailers are almost exclusively used for shipping perishable goods. Typical cargo types include:
Perishable foods and beverages are by far the most common cargo.
Hazardous materials must be kept chilled for safety.
Pharmaceuticals that are temperature sensitive.
Some electronics, if they are heat-sensitive – although moisture control is critical!
High-value artwork is also sometimes shipped chilled if moving through hot areas.
How Much Weight Can a Reefer Trailer Carry?
Reefer trailers can handle almost as much weight as a standard dry van trailer, up to the US Federal maximum of 80,000 pounds for dual axles or 90,000 pounds for triple axles.
However, owners and shippers should be aware that the refrigeration equipment will typically weigh around one ton, which cuts into its overall weight capability. This is unavoidable. Reefer trailer companies do their best to keep the weight down, but refrigeration equipment is heavy.
