What To Look for In Used Reefer Trailers for Sale
If you have a refrigerated trailer – a reefer – your money-making prospects go way up! Chilled and frozen goods are always in high demand, and there often aren’t the number of adequately equipped operators to that demand. A reefer could be an excellent investment in your rig, and it’s an even easier buy when there are used reefer trailers for sale.
However, caution is called for when buying used. Some trailers have not been treated well, or their sellers may be trying to cover up problems. You’ll want to take care and do some research before buying.
Three Must-Dos Before Buying Any Used Reefer Trailers For Sale
1 – Research the seller
If the seller is a dealership or other professional, read up on them. Look up online reviews and check to see if they have a profile at the Better Business Bureau. Used trailers often don’t have much in the way of warranties, so you want to make sure the person you’re buying from is reputable.
Along the same lines, buying a used reefer trailer from an individual – such as through an auction site – is rarely a good idea. There’s just no way of knowing what you’re going to get.
2 – Carefully examine the trailer itself
Never buy a used reefer trailer without being able to see it in person, hands-on, and start it up to see how it performs. Ensure it can achieve properly cold temperatures in a reasonable amount of time. Check for any fluid leaks and any signs of rust on the undercarriage and supports. Then check its electrical system to ensure all the lights and other systems work correctly.
Also, pay attention to the wheels. Wheels are often a good indicator of how well a trailer was kept up overall. If the wheels are old and worn, there are probably other problems.
3 – Get the weight
Reefer trailers are heavier than other trailers – potentially up to 44,000 pounds. The weight will substantially impact how much you can haul. Get the weight from the buyer and -if possible- verify it on scales. Or at least look up the model online to check the listed weight. You need to know it’ll be able to handle the loads you want to haul.
